Matt Mullarkey, CFA

Head of Advisory, Americas

Matt is Head of Portfolio Advisory, Americas, where he works with North American-based clients and oversees a team of advisory professionals. He has spent the last 11 years specializing as an allocator and advisor in alternative investments. As head of the team and lead advisor, Matt works with clients to develop program governance, provide strategy allocation and portfolio construction advice and support the ongoing management of their alternative investment programs. He has experience helping clients in all stages of their programs, whether they are investing in alternatives for the first time, transitioning from fund of funds to direct investments, or maintaining a mature portfolio. Prior to joining Aksia in May 2011, Matt was an Investment Officer and portfolio manager for the Absolute Return Strategies Group of the New York State Common Retirement Fund. He managed a $1.5 billion long/short equity portfolio as part of the pension fund’s $4.3 billion hedge fund program. Matt was an integral part of the team that restructured the pension’s hedge fund program, transforming it from a $5.5 billion fund of hedge funds focused strategy, to a concentrated direct investment portfolio. The pension fund was recognized by Institutional Investor as “Large Plan of the Year” at its 2010 Hedge Fund Industry Awards. Prior to working at the New York State Common Retirement Fund, Matt had an active career in public service, where he was a senior advisor to government officials at the city, state and federal levels. He was a Deputy Chief of Staff for the New York City Council, an Assistant Comptroller for the New York State Comptroller’s Office, and Chief of Staff to a Congressman. Matt graduated from The State University of New York at Albany with a B.A. in History and completed a Master of Urban Planning from New York University, Wagner School. He is a CFA charterholder, and was recognized as Hedge Fund Consultant of the Year by Institutional Investor Magazine in 2015.
